Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Whoever holds the Naam in the heart with love and awe lives by the Guru's way and knows the true Bani.
When the clouds pour down rain, the earth grows beautiful. The One's Light fills every heart.
A mind gone wrong plants its seeds in salty, barren ground. That is the mark of someone with no Guru.
Without the True Guru, there is deep darkness. People drown there, even with no water.
When the Naam rains into the heart, it grows beautiful, the way the earth turns green after rain.
This is Malaar's own picture, the monsoon. Indu varsai — the rains pour down. Indu is Indra, the bringer of rain in the old Indian stories; here the word simply means the rains have come. The earth turns lovely, and the One's jot, Light, fills every heart.
Kaalar is salty, barren ground where nothing grows. Planting seeds there is what durmat, a mind gone wrong, does. Without the Guru, the verse says, it is pitch dark, and people drown with no water at all, lost in their own confusion.
What in your life started to bloom once it finally got what it needed?
