Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 65
Verse 8 of 9

Held In The Flow

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
jo kichh keeno so parabhoo rajaa-ay.
Whatever God does, is by His Own Will.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jo Dhur likhi-aa so maytnaa na jaa-ay.
That which is pre-ordained cannot be erased.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਬਾਧਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
hukmay baaDhaa kaar kamaa-ay.
Bound to the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the mortal does his deeds.
ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੭॥
ayk sabad raachai sach samaa-ay. ||7||
Permeated by the One Word of the Shabad, the mortal is immersed in Truth. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever happens is done by the One's own will.

What was written from the very beginning cannot be rubbed out.

Tied to the flow of existence, each of us does our work.

Soaked in the one Word, a person melts into Truth.

Stop fighting the current, and the flow of existence carries you.
The deeper layer

Everything moves within the flow of existence, and the Word lets you rest in it.

Hukam is the flow of existence, the way everything moves, like a river. Dhur likhi-aa means what was written from the start; no one can rub it out. You live and act inside that flow. Ek sabad raachai — soaked in the one Word — you merge into sach, Truth, carried and at ease.

A Question to Sit With

When has going along with the way things naturally flow felt better than fighting it?
