Meant To Swim, Not Sink

ਏਕ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਜੀਆ ਖਾਹੀ ॥
ayk jee-a kai jee-aa khaahee.
For your one life, you consume many lives.
ਜਲਿ ਤਰਤੀ ਬੂਡੀ ਜਲ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
jal tartee boodee jal maahee. ||2||
You were supposed to swim in the water, but you are drowning in it instead. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

To feed your one life, you eat up many lives.

You were meant to swim in the water, and you are sinking in it instead.

You were made to glide over life gently, not to sink by grabbing too much.
The deeper layer

We were made to glide through life gently, not to sink by grabbing too much.

Ayk jee-a kai jee-aa khaahee: for your one life, you eat many lives. The stork feeds itself by catching many fish. For us, it means living at others' cost, taking more than our share without noticing what it costs them.

Jal tartee boodee jal maahee: you were meant to swim in the water, but you are drowning in it. A bird is made to glide over the water. Greed pulls it under, into the very thing it was meant to float on.

The teaching is simple: do not feed yourself at the cost of others.

A Question to Sit With

When has wanting more ended up weighing you down?
