Kindness Before The Reckoning

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਕੀਏ ਪ੍ਰਤਪਾਨੀ ॥
sarab jee-a kee-ay paratpaanee.
You have tormented all beings.
ਜਬ ਪਕੜੀ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
jab pakrhee tab hee pachhutaanee. ||3||
When Death seizes you, then you shall regret and repent. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You have hurt every living being.

When death comes to take you, then you will be sorry.

Choose kindness now, while you still can — don't save it for regret.
The deeper layer

Choose kindness now, while there is time, instead of carrying regret later.

Sarab jee-a kee-ay paratpaanee: you have troubled all beings. Careless living leaves hurts all around, sometimes without our even meaning to.

Jab pakrhee tab hee pachhutaanee: when you are caught, then you will regret it. The verse means being seized by death, at the end of life. It is the honest look back of conscience, when we finally see the hurts we caused.

The warning points forward. Why wait? It is like saying sorry to a friend today, instead of wishing years later that you had. There is still time to change.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a small kindness you could choose today instead of putting it off?
