Freedom While You Still Have It

ਜਬ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਸ ਪੜੀ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
jab gal faas parhee at bhaaree.
When the heavy noose is placed around your neck,
ਊਡਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਪੰਖ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
ood na saakai pankh pasaaree. ||4||
you may spread your wings, but you shall not be able to fly. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the hunter's heavy snare pulls tight around you, you spread your wings, but you cannot fly.

Use your freedom while the sky is still open — don't wait until rising is hard.
The deeper layer

Use your freedom while you still have it.

Jab gal faas parhee at bhaaree: when the heavy faas, the hunter's snare, closes tight. The stork is caught. Ood na saakai pankh pasaaree: it spreads its wings but cannot fly.

The picture is of a moment when a habit has quietly closed off our choices. Think of a kite string that keeps getting more tangled. At first a small tug would free it. Later, nothing works.

So the time to rise is now, while the wings are loose and the sky is open.

A Question to Sit With

What's something easier to change now than it will be later?
