The Way Out Is Real

ਰਸਿ ਚੂਗਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਿ ॥
ras choogeh manmukh gaavaar.
You enjoy the tastes and flavors, you foolish self-willed manmukh.
ਫਾਥੀ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੫॥
faathee chhooteh gun gi-aan beechaar. ||5||
You are trapped. You can only be saved by virtuous conduct, spiritual wisdom and contemplation. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You peck at sweet tastes, foolish one, led by your own wanting.

You are trapped. Good ways of living, wisdom, and quiet thinking are what set you free.

No trap is permanent — kindness, wisdom, and quiet thought loosen it.
The deeper layer

Getting stuck is real, but there is always a way out.

Ras choogeh manmukh gaavaar: you peck at one tasty thing after another, foolish manmukh. A manmukh is someone led by the small, self-willed part of us. Chasing tastes and pleasures is like eating chips from the bag. One more, then one more, until you feel stuck.

Faathee chhooteh gun gi-aan beechaar: you are trapped, and three things set you free. Gun, good ways of living. Gi-aan, wisdom. Beechaar, quietly thinking things through.

That is the hope here. No trap lasts forever. Kindness, wisdom and quiet thought loosen it.

A Question to Sit With

What's one small habit that, changed, would help you feel less stuck?
