Verse 7 of 9

The Fear Of Death Loses Its Grip

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤੂਟੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥
satgur sayv tootai jamkaal.
Serving the True Guru, you will shatter the Messenger of Death.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੁ ॥੬॥
hirdai saachaa sabad samHaal. ||6||
In your heart, dwell on the True Word of the Shabad. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Serve the True Guru, and the grip of death is broken.

Keep the true Word close in your heart.

Living close to what's true loosens even the fear of dying.
The deeper layer

Living close to the teaching loosens even the fear of dying.

Satgur sayv tootai jamkaal: serving the True Guru breaks jamkaal, the messenger of death. It means the fear of death loses its grip.

The way to do it: keep the true Word, the sabad, safe in your heart. It steadies you, like a night-light in a dark room.

Held that way, death looks less like something to dread and more like a gentle passage.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel calm when you think about big, scary things?
