Everyone longs for the Name of the Lord; without good destiny, it is not obtained.

When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, the mortal meets the True Guru, and the Lord's Name comes to dwell within the mind.

O Nanak, through the Name, honor wells up, and the mortal remains immersed in the Lord. ||8||2||

In plain words

Everyone longs for the Naam of the One. Without good fortune, it is not found.

When the One looks with kindness, I meet the Guru, and the Naam of the One comes to live in my mind.

Nanak says: through the Naam alone, honor rises up, and I stay soaked in the One.

Everyone is quietly reaching for the same thing — and grace brings it home.
The deeper layer

Everyone longs for the Name, and it comes to us as a gift of grace.

Har naavai no sabh ko partaapdaa: everyone yearns for the Name, even if they can't say what they are missing. It can't be grabbed. It comes when the One looks at us kindly. That kind look is called nadar, grace.

With grace, we meet the Guru, and the Name comes to live in the mind. From the Name grows pat, honor, a quiet dignity. Think of a plant that stands tall because it has deep roots. Guru Nanak's name closes the song: through the Name, we rest, soaked in the One. The longing everyone shares is answered by grace.

A Question to Sit With

What do you think everyone, deep down, is looking for?
