There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
When the One, Har, Har, shows kindness, the One sets me to work for the Guru.
My pain is taken away, and the Naam of the One comes to live inside me.
True freedom comes when my mind rests on the True One.
Listen to the Guru's Bani, the Word.
When grace touches us, it turns us toward the Guru's work, and our pain starts to ease.
This is the opening of a longer song by Guru Amar Das. Har har kirpaa karay gur kee kaarai laa-ay: when the One shows kindness, we are set to work for the Guru. Grace here is kirpaa, the kindness of the Giver. Then dukh palhar har naam vasaa-ay: pain is taken away, and the Name comes to live inside.
The last line asks us to listen to the Guru's Word. Think of the difference between music playing in the background and a song you listen to closely. Deep listening means letting the words sink in, not just hearing them go by. True freedom grows when we keep our attention on the True One like that.
What's the difference between hearing something and letting it all the way in?
