Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, serve the One, Har, Har, the true treasure.

By the Guru's grace, the wealth of the One is found. Day and night, keep your mind on the One.

The one treasure worth keeping is the one that never loses its shine.
The deeper layer

Serve the One, because the One is the true treasure that never runs out.

This line is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the whole shabad. Man mayray har har sayv nidhaan: O my mind, serve the One, the true treasure. Man means mind, and nidhaan means a treasure store.

Money, toys and trophies wear out, get lost or stop mattering. This treasure never runs out. It comes by the Guru's grace, and we keep it close by thinking of the One day and night. It is like the thought of someone you love, which stays with you all day long.

A Question to Sit With

If you could keep just one thing forever, what would you want it to be?
