Why The Ache Keeps Coming Back

ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਕੀਏ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ॥
khasam visaar kee-ay ras bhog.
Forgetting his Lord and Master, the mortal enjoys sensual pleasures;
ਤਾਂ ਤਨਿ ਉਠਿ ਖਲੋਏ ਰੋਗ ॥
taaN tan uth khalo-ay rog.
then, disease rises up in his body.
ਮਨ ਅੰਧੇ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
man anDhay ka-o milai sajaa-ay.
The blind mortal receives his punishment.
ਵੈਦ ਨ ਭੋਲੇ ਦਾਰੂ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
vaid na bholay daaroo laa-ay. ||2||
O foolish doctor, don't give me medicine. ||2||

In plain words

Forgetting the Master, a person chases pleasures.

Then sickness rises up in the body.

The mind that will not see pays the price.

Simple doctor, do not give me medicine.

We keep meeting the same ache when we look for healing in the wrong place.
The deeper layer

When we forget the One and chase only quick pleasures, trouble rises up inside us.

Khasam visaar kee-ay ras bhog: forgetting the Master, a person lives only for pleasures. Khasam means master, and here it means the One. Then tan uth khalo-ay rog: sickness rises up in the body.

Man andhay ka-o milai sajaa-ay: the blind mind gets its punishment. Man andhay means a mind that can't yet see. We can hear the punishment as the natural result of looking for help in the wrong place. Think of eating only candy all week. Nobody has to punish you. The tummy ache comes on its own. And once again, ordinary medicine won't fix it.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever kept doing something that did not make you feel any better?
