Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 7
Verse 4 of 5

What Gives A Life Its Worth

ਚੰਦਨ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
chandan kaa fal chandan vaas.
The value of sandalwood lies in its fragrance.
ਮਾਣਸ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਸੁ ॥
maanas kaa fal ghat meh saas.
The value of the human lasts only as long as the breath in the body.
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਇਐ ਕਾਇਆ ਢਲਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
saas ga-i-ai kaa-i-aa dhal paa-ay.
When the breath is taken away, the body crumbles into dust.
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੩॥
taa kai paachhai ko-ay na khaa-ay. ||3||
After that, no one takes any food. ||3||

In plain words

The worth of sandalwood is its sweet smell.

The worth of a person lasts as long as there is breath in the body.

When the breath goes, the body falls back into dust.

After that, no food is eaten anymore.

A life's worth is the sweetness it carries, like a fragrance.
The deeper layer

Sandalwood is loved for its sweet smell, and a life is precious while we have breath.

Chandan kaa fal chandan vaas: the worth of sandalwood is its fragrance. Chandan is sandalwood, a wood with a lovely scent. Maanas kaa fal ghat meh saas: a person's worth lasts while there is breath in the body.

The verse gently reminds us that the body returns to dust one day. It is not meant to scare us. It helps us ask a good question. Think of a candle. It won't burn forever, so what matters is the light it gives while it burns. What sweetness do I carry while I have my breath?

A Question to Sit With

What is the sweetness or goodness you would most want your life to carry?
