Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 7
Verse 5 of 5

One Spark Of The Name

ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੰਸੁ ॥
kanchan kaa-i-aa nirmal hans.
The mortal's body is golden, and the soul-swan is immaculate and pure,
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅੰਸੁ ॥
jis meh naam niranjan aNs.
if even a tiny particle of the Immaculate Naam is within.
ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
dookh rog sabh ga-i-aa gavaa-ay.
All pain and disease are eradicated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੨॥੭॥
naanak chhootas saachai naa-ay. ||4||2||7||
O Nanak, the mortal is saved through the True Name. ||4||2||7||

In plain words

The body turns to gold, and the soul, like a swan, is spotless and pure, when even a tiny spark of the spotless Naam is inside.

All pain and sickness are gone.

Nanak says: a person is set free through the True Naam.

Even a tiny spark of the Name can heal the deepest ache.
The deeper layer

Even a tiny spark of the Name makes us shine and heals the deep ache.

Kanchan kaa-i-aa nirmal hans: the body becomes golden, and the soul shines clean. Kanchan means gold. Hans means swan, an old picture for the soul. When does this happen? Jis meh naam niranjan ans: when even a tiny bit of the pure Name is inside.

Then all the pain and sickness go away. Think of one small candle in a dark room. It changes the whole room. Guru Nanak closes the song: we are freed through the True Name. This is the medicine the doctor could not give.

A Question to Sit With

How can something very small — a spark, a seed — still change everything?
