In plain words

Pain is the poison. The One's Naam is the cure.

Grind it in a bowl of contentment, with the pestle of giving to others.

Take it every single day, and your body will not waste away.

And at the very last moment, you will knock death down.

The cure for pain is made at home — contentment the bowl, giving the pestle.
The deeper layer

Pain works like poison, and the Naam is the cure, ground at home from contentment and giving.

Guru Nanak writes a recipe. Pain is the poison (mahuraa), and the Naam is the medicine that kills it (maaran). The mortar is santokh, contentment, and the pestle is daan, giving. Taken every day, it keeps you whole, and at the very end death has no hold on you. Think of a family recipe passed down at the kitchen table, made by hand and shared.

A Question to Sit With

How could being content and being generous make you feel better?
