The Wealth That Comes And Goes, And The Wealth That Stays
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The night is wet with dew, the lightning flashes, and the rain pours down in streams.
When it rains, food and wealth grow in plenty, if that is the will of the Master.
Eating it, every heart is satisfied, and all beings find their way of living.
This wealth is the Creator's play; sometimes it comes, and sometimes it goes.
The Naam is the wealth of the wise; it stays with them forever.
Nanak says: those the One looks on with kindness receive this wealth.
Some wealth comes and goes like the seasons, and the Naam is the wealth that stays.
Bhinnee rain chamki-aa: a dewy night, lightning, and pouring rain. The rain brings an dhan, grain and wealth, and every living being is fed. It is good, and it is the Creator's khayl, play: kaday aavai kaday jaa-ay, sometimes it comes, sometimes it goes.
Gi-aanee-aa kaa dhan naam hai: the Naam is the wealth of the wise, and it stays forever. It comes by nadar, the One's kind glance. Think of a harvest that fills the barn for a season, and a friendship that stays for life.
What do you have that you could never lose?
