The Rain Falls On Everyone Alike

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥
salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਇਹੁ ਜਲੁ ਸਭ ਤੈ ਵਰਸਦਾ ਵਰਸੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
ih jal sabh tai varasdaa varsai bhaa-ay subhaa-ay.
This rain pours down on all; it rains down in accordance with God's Loving Will.
ਸੇ ਬਿਰਖਾ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
say birkhaa haree-aavlay jo gurmukh rahay samaa-ay.
Those trees become green and lush, which remain immersed in the Guru's Word.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਏਨਾ ਜੰਤਾ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak nadree sukh ho-ay aynaa jantaa kaa dukh jaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, by His Grace, there is peace; the pain of these creatures is gone. ||1||

In plain words

This rain falls on everyone; it falls out of the One's own love.

The trees that stay soaked in the Guru's word turn green and full.

Nanak says: by the One's kind look there is peace, and the pain of all these beings goes away.

Grace falls on everyone — staying green is about staying rooted.
The deeper layer

The rain falls on everyone alike, and the trees that stay soaked in the Guru's word turn green.

Ih jal sabh tai varasdaa: this water rains on all. Bhaa-ay subhaa-ay: it falls out of love, as its own nature. Grace takes no sides. So birkhaa haree-aavalay: the trees that stay samaa-ay, soaked in the Word, are the ones that turn green. Nadree sukh: by the One's kind glance, peace comes and dukh, pain, goes.

Think of two plants on the same windowsill. Both get the same sunlight, and the one whose roots drink deep grows tall.

A Question to Sit With

Two people get the same chance; why does it bloom for one and not the other?
