Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Yogi masters, those who never marry, people of special powers, and Muslim holy guides: none of them has found where You end.
Those who follow the Guru meditate on the Naam and melt into You.
For thirty-six ages there was only deep darkness, as the One wished.
The One spread out a vast, endless swirl of water.
The Maker of all is endless, beyond all limits, beyond reach.
The One made fire and quarrels, hunger and thirst.
Death hangs over the heads of the world's people who love "two."
The One who saves keeps safe those who understand the Word.
Before time began, there was only the One, with no beginning and no end.
Naath jatee siDh peer kinai ant na paa-i-aa: yogi masters, those who stayed unmarried for the One, siDh (people said to have special powers) and peer (Muslim spiritual guides) never found the One's limit. Masters of many paths all meet the same mystery. None is ranked above the others.
Gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ay tujhai samaa-i-aa: those turned toward the Guru keep the Naam and melt into You.
Jug chhateeh gubaar: for thirty-six ages there was only deep darkness, as the One wished. This is a hymn about the time before time. Try to picture the moment before the first light came on, before any clock started ticking.
Neel aneel agamm sarjeet sabaa-i-aa: the One is endless, beyond reach, and made everything. Fire, conflict, hunger and thirst were made too, and the verse holds them with wonder.
The verse also says death hangs over those who love doojaa, "two," something second in place of the One. But it ends with rescue. Rakhai rakhanhaar jin sabad bujhaa-i-aa: the Saving One keeps safe all who understand the Word.
Does it comfort you or amaze you to think about what came before everything?
