Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O rainbird, your home is in the water; you move about in the water.
But you do not know the worth of the water, and so you cry out.
It rains on water and on land, in every direction; no place is left dry.
With so much rain falling, those who still die of thirst are so unlucky.
Nanak says: those who follow the Guru understand; the One lives in their hearts.
You are already surrounded by the very thing you are crying for.
Baabeehaa jal meh tayraa vaas hai: rainbird, you live in the water, yet you cry for water. Khaalee ko thaa-o naahi: no place is left dry. The One's grace falls everywhere. What we lack is knowing its saar, its worth.
Those who follow the Guru notice what is already here, and the One lives in their hearts. Think of a fish asking where the ocean is.
What are you searching for that might already be all around you?
