This world is a rainbird; let no one be deluded by doubt.

This rainbird is an animal; it has no understanding at all.

The Name of the Lord is Ambrosial Nectar; drinking it in, thirst is quenched.

O Nanak, those Gurmukhs who drink it in shall never again be afflicted by thirst. ||1||

In plain words

This whole world is like the rainbird, always thirsty. Don't let doubt fool you.

The rainbird is only a creature, like an animal with no understanding; it does not know what will end its thirst.

The Naam of the One is sweet nectar. Drink it, and the thirst goes away.

Nanak says: those who drink it by following the Guru never feel that thirst again.

The longing you feel is a compass, not a curse; it points you home.
The deeper layer

The world is thirsty like the rainbird, and the Naam is the nectar that ends the thirst.

A salok of the Third Mehl, Guru Amar Das. The baabeehaa, the rainbird or pied cuckoo, is said to drink only drops of falling rain, so it is Malaar's picture of viraha, longing. Here the whole world is that bird: restless and wanting, and pasoo, like an animal that does not understand what it needs. Amrit naam, the nectar of the Naam, is the one rain that ends the thirst.

A Question to Sit With

What have you been thirsty for that no amount of getting more ever seems to fill?
