Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There are countless worlds above and below; I cannot count them.
You are the Maker, the Lord of the World. You made it all, and You take it all away.
All the millions of kinds of living things came from You alone.
Some are called kings and lords and nobles.
Some call themselves rich and pile up money, but, caught up in what is second to You, they lose their honor.
Some are givers and some are beggars, and the same One is over them all.
Without the Naam, a person is coarse and unhappy, a sad and frightening sight.
Nanak says: what is false runs out; whatever the True One does, that happens.
Kings, bankers, givers and beggars all come from the One, and without the Naam any life turns coarse and empty.
This is the twelfth pauri. Lakh chauraaseeh, 8.4 million kinds of beings, and khand pataal asankh, countless worlds, set a person inside a huge creation. Piling up money doojai, in love with what is second to the One, costs honor. Being poor is no fault; clinging is the trouble. Koorh nikhutay: falsehood runs out, and only what the True One does stands.
If your name and your stuff were taken away, what would still be you?
