O Nanak, without the True Name, his honor is torn away, from head to foot. ||2||

In plain words

Love passes, and affection passes. Hate passes, and quarrels pass too.

The color fades and the beauty is gone. The body grows weary and falls.

Where did this person come from? Where did they go? Were they here at all, or not?

The one who followed only their own mind talked big, and spent the days on parties and fun.

Nanak says: without the True Name, all their honor is torn away, from head to toe.

Everything on the surface fades; the True Name keeps its worth.
The deeper layer

Everything we feel and everything we look like passes with time. Only the True Name keeps its worth.

Mu-aa pi-aar pareet mu-ee mu-aa vair vaadee: love and affection pass, and so do hatred and strife. Even the feelings that seem strongest do not last forever. Kithhu aa-i-aa kah ga-i-aa: where did we come from, and where are we going? These are the big questions every person wonders about.

The manmukh, the one who follows only their own mind, spends life on boasting and parties. Without sachaa naam, the True Name, that life ends up thin and torn, with nothing left that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

Underneath your likes, dislikes, and moods, what feels most like you?
