Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Some have chains around their necks, held in the One's prison.
The bound are set free when they know the True One as true.
Whoever receives what was written for them comes to know the Truth.
In the flow of the One's will, everything is settled. When a person leaves this world, they know.
Know the Word, the Shabad, and it carries you across the scary sea of the world.
Thieves, people who break faith in love, and gamblers are squeezed like seeds in an oil press.
People who speak badly of others and spread gossip end up in handcuffs.
The one who turns to the Guru melts into the True One, and is known and honored in the One's Court.
What we do can tie us up, and knowing what is true sets us free.
Some people have chains around their necks. BaDhay chhuteh sach sach pachhaanee-ai: the bound are set free by knowing sach, the Truth, as true. Truth is the key that opens the lock.
Likhi-aa palai paa-ay so sach jaanee-ai: what is written for us comes into our hands. Hukmee ho-ay nibayrh ga-i-aa jaanee-ai: by the One's hukam, the Will, everything is settled, and at the end we understand. Like a seed that grows into what it was planted to be, what we practice ripens in the One's order.
Bha-ojal taaranhaar sabad pachhaanee-ai: know the Word, which carries us across the scary ocean of the world.
Then the verse gives hard pictures. Thieves, cheats and gamblers are crushed like seeds in an oil press, and slanderers are handcuffed. Dishonesty and tearing others down tie us tighter to our own trouble.
The gurmukh, the one turned toward the Guru, melts into Truth and is honored in the One's Court.
If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.
Is there a habit that ties you up, and one that sets you free?
