In plain words

Power, money, beauty, social rank and youth: these are the five thieves.

These thieves have robbed the whole world. No one's honor has been spared.

But the thieves themselves get robbed by those who fall at the Guru's feet.

Nanak says: so many others, without good karma, are robbed as they go.

The things that can steal you lose their power the moment you see them clearly.
The deeper layer

Power, money, beauty, rank and youth can steal a life away. Humble learners turn the tables on them.

Raaj maal roop jaat joban panjay thag: power, wealth, beauty, social rank and youth are the five thag, thieves. They promise to make you somebody, and they rob the whole world while they do it.

Aynaa thagni thag say je gur kee pairee paahi: the ones who fall at the Guru's feet rob the robbers. Bowing low to learn takes away the thieves' grip. The five things are still there, and they stop running the show.

A Question to Sit With

Which of these five pulls at you most, and how do you keep it from running the show?
