Better The Quiet Than The Barking

It is good to be silent, O Nanak; without the Name, one's mouth spews forth only filth. ||1||

In plain words

Beauty and strong desire are friends. Hunger and tasty food are tied together.

Greed is all wrapped up in chasing money, and sleep will turn even a tiny corner into a bed.

Anger barks and ruins itself, blindly picking useless fights.

Nanak says: it is good to be quiet. Without the Naam, only dirt comes out of the mouth.

Anger barks loudest and settles least.
The deeper layer

Our wants pair up with the things they chase. Anger barks the loudest, and quiet with the Naam is better.

Roopai kaamai dostee bhukhai saadai gandh: beauty and desire are friends, hunger and taste are tied together. Greed sticks to money, and sleep finds a bed anywhere. Bha-ukai kop khu-aar ho-ay: anger barks like a dog and wears itself out in pointless fights.

Chupai changaa naankaa: it is good to be quiet. This quiet is more than holding your tongue. It comes from the Naam. Without the Naam, words come out dirty; with it, they come out clean.

A Question to Sit With

When has staying quiet served you better than firing back?
