What The Body Cannot Take Along

Neither this body, nor its wings, shall go to the world hereafter.

It is a fusion of air, water and fire.

O Nanak, if it is in the mortal's karma, then he meditates on the Lord, with the Guru as his Spiritual Teacher.

This body is absorbed in the Truth. ||4||4||9||

In plain words

Neither this body nor its wings will go along to the world beyond.

It is air, water and fire, joined together for a while.

Nanak says: when it is in your karma, you meditate on the One, with the Guru as your guide.

Then this body melts into Truth.

The body is borrowed from the elements, but the deepest part of you rests in what lasts.
The deeper layer

The body is borrowed from air, water and fire, and with the Guru as guide it settles into Truth.

Na ih tan jaa-igaa na jaahigay khanbh: neither body nor wings travel on. They are a joining of pa-un, paanee, agnee, air, water and fire, and return to them. Karam here also carries the sense of the One's kindness, a gift. With the Guru as guide, sach samaavai ayhu sareer: this body merges into Truth.

A Question to Sit With

If your body is on loan from air, water, and fire, what part of you feels most your own?
