Verse 4 of 5

When Kindness Rains, the Heart Dances Like a Peacock

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ਜਿਉ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਸਿ ਕਮਲੇ ॥
har kay sant man pareet lagaa-ee ji-o daykhai sas kamlay.
The Lord's Saint loves the Lord in his mind, like the lotus flower gazing at the moon.
ਉਨਵੈ ਘਨੁ ਘਨ ਘਨਿਹਰੁ ਗਰਜੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਮੋਰ ਮੁਰਲੇ ॥੩॥
unvai ghan ghan ghanihar garjai man bigsai mor murlay. ||3||
The clouds hang low, the clouds tremble with thunder, and the mind dances joyfully like the peacock. ||3||

In plain words

A loving heart turns toward the good the way a flower turns toward the moon.

And when the rain-clouds of kindness roll in, the heart dances for joy, like a peacock in the rain.

When kindness pours down like rain, your heart can dance for joy — like a peacock in the rain.
The deeper layer

This is the raag's keynote verse, full of dancing joy. Two beloved images: the lotus gazing at the moon — the heart naturally turning toward what it loves, the way a night-flower opens to moonlight; and the peacock dancing in the rain — when the monsoon clouds roll in (the rain of grace), the peacock spreads its feathers and dances. So the heart, when kindness pours down, dances with joy. This is why the raag is named for the dancer: remembrance isn't grim duty but pure, spreading gladness. For a child: when kindness pours down like rain, your heart can dance for joy, like a peacock in the rain.

A Question to Sit With
