Turning Good Words Over in Your Heart Is Sweet

ਤੇਰੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਥਾ ਕਥਾ ਹੈ ਮੀਠੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਨੀਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥
tayree nirgun kathaa kathaa hai meethee gur neekay bachan samaaray.
Your unlimited sermon is the most sweet sermon; I contemplate the most Sublime Word of the Guru.
ਗਾਵਤ ਗਾਵਤ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
gaavat gaavat har gun gaa-ay gun gaavat gur nistaaray. ||2||
Singing, singing, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; singing His Glorious Praises, the Guru saves me. ||2||

In plain words

The good, true words are the sweetest thing to turn over in your heart.

Singing about the good, again and again, I'm kept safe and glad.

Turning good, true words over in your heart is sweet — and singing them keeps you glad and safe.
The deeper layer

This one says: good words are sweet to think about, and singing them keeps you safe.

"Your endless story is the sweetest story." The good words of the Guru, the wise teacher, are sweet to turn over in your heart, the way you replay a favourite moment.

Then: gaavat gaavat har gun gaa-ay — "singing, singing, I sing the good." Guru Ram Das repeats "singing, singing," and you can hear the joy of this dancing raag in it. Think of a song you love so much you sing it all the way home. Singing the good keeps the heart glad and safe.

A Question to Sit With

What good words are sweet for you to sing or say over and over?
