Sikhism·Raag Nat Naaraayan·Shabad 21
Verse 7 of 9

Plant Real, Good Seeds Instead of Pretending

ਕਲਰੁ ਖੇਤੁ ਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੇ ਖਲਵਾਰੇ ॥
kalar khayt lai koorh jamaa-i-aa sabh koorhai kay khalvaaray.
Taking a barren field, they plant falsehood; they shall harvest only falsehood.
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਸਭਿ ਭੂਖ ਭੁਖਾਨੇ ਦਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
saakat nar sabh bhookh bhukhaanay dar thaadhay jam jandaaray. ||6||
The materialistic people shall all remain hungry; the brutal Messenger of Death stands waiting at their door. ||6||

In plain words

Planting only pretend and grabbing is like sowing a barren field — nothing good grows.

That kind of heart stays hungry, because it never planted anything real.

Planting only pretending and grabbing grows nothing good — so plant real, good seeds instead.
The deeper layer

This one says: what you plant is what grows, so plant real, good seeds.

The verse uses a farming picture. Kalar khayt lai koorh jamaa-i-aa — "taking a barren field, they plant falsehood." A barren field is dry ground where good things won't grow. Plant lies there, and you harvest only lies.

Those who live only for grabbing "remain hungry." The verse also warns that death waits at their door. The simple point is that empty seeds give an empty harvest. Think of a school garden. If you plant real seeds and water them, you get tomatoes. If you plant pebbles, you get nothing, however long you wait.

A Question to Sit With

What good 'seeds' would you rather plant in the field of your life?
