Verse 8 of 9

Mistakes Pile Like Debts but Settle by Turning Back

manmukh karaj charhi-aa bikh bhaaree utrai sabad veechaaray.
The self-willed manmukh has accumulated a tremendous load of debt in sin; only by contemplating the Word of the Shabad, can this debt be paid off.
As much debt and as many creditors as there are, the Lord makes them into servants, who fall at his feet. ||7||

In plain words

Choices pile up like debts — but they can all be settled by turning back to the good.

And once the good takes charge, even the heavy things become willing helpers.

Mistakes can pile up like debts — but they can all be settled by turning back to the good.
The deeper layer

This one says: mistakes can pile up like a debt, but turning back to the good pays it off.

A debt is money you owe. The verse says a heart lost in grabbing "has built up a huge load of debt." Then: utrai sabad veechaaray — it is paid off by thinking on the Shabad, the Guru's word.

Then a hopeful turn. The ones you owe are turned into helpers, who "fall at his feet." Think of owing your brother a lot of chores. You finally sit down and sort it out, and he ends up helping you finish them. Even heavy things can become helpers once the good is in charge.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to settle a 'debt' of mistakes and start fresh?
