Every Color and Shape Comes From the Good

har har roop rang sabh tayray mayray laalan laal gulaaray.
O Lord, Har, Har, all forms and colors are Yours; O my Beloved, my deep crimson ruby.

Only that color which You impart, Lord, exists; O Nanak, what can the poor wretched being do? ||8||3||

In plain words

Every shape and every color in the world is Yours — my deep, glowing jewel.

Whatever brightness we have comes from You; we're small, and You are the source of it all.

Every color and shape in the world comes from the good — and whatever brightness you carry, it gave you.
The deeper layer

This one says: every color and shape comes from the One, and so does any brightness you have.

This is the last verse of the ashtapadee, a hymn of eight verses. It ends in wonder. "All forms and colors are Yours... my deep crimson ruby." Crimson is a deep, glowing red.

In Gurbani, deep red is the color of love that lasts, like a dye that never washes out. "Only that color which You give, Lord, exists." Think of a box of paints. Every color in the picture came out of that box. Whatever brightness we carry was given to us.

A Question to Sit With

What's a bright, good quality in you that you're grateful to have been given?
