Raag Prabhaatee
Commentary

Raag Prabhaatee, Shabad, Bibhaas, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

You did not build yourself — you were made with care, out of the whole world, by a Giver who keeps giving and a Friend who never leaves.

The Arc

The shabad opens Guru Arjan's Prabhaatee set at the beginning: the making of a human being. The rahau (P1) turns the maker into a teacher and asks for steadiness through joy and sorrow. From there the pauris circle the same Giver — the One who made the body (P0), who provides food, family, and care for every creature (P2), who forgives completely and never brings it up again (P3), and who is finally found not by effort but in the company of the good (P4), where the seeker asks simply to see.

Key Vocabulary

Panch tat — the five elements the body is woven from. Saarigpaanee — the One who holds and nourishes the world. Harakh sog — joy and sorrow, the pair one learns to stand steady between. Niraaraa — unattached, untouched. SaaDhsangat — the company of the holy, where God is found.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The steadiness-through-joy-and-sorrow of the rahau is sahaj, the natural equilibrium of the aligned soul — met again across this raag. The complete, non-transactional forgiveness of P3 ("never asks for one's account again") pairs with the grace-always-here reading: nothing is earned, everything is washed. P4's "kirat sanjogee" gives a light, child-friendly touch on karma as the deep currents shaping a life.

For Raag Prabhaatee

This is the raag of daybreak, and a creation-hymn is the right way to begin: waking into a world, and a body, you did not make. The gentleness toward faults (washed, not punished) sets the tone for Guru Arjan's Prabhaatee shabads, which return again and again to belonging, safety, and the removal of fear.

Translation Notes

P0's "do not forget for an instant" is framed positively, as continuous easy remembering rather than a warning. P3's "kot apraaDh" (millions of sins) is rendered as mistakes washed clean, keeping self-condemnation out of the children's text.
