The Nectar That Clears The Poison

ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਹਜੁ ਨਾਇ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥
naa-ay tayrai sahj naa-ay saalaah.
Your Name brings intuitive peace and poise; Your Name brings praise.
ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
naa-o tayraa amrit bikh uth jaa-ay.
Your Name is the Ambrosial Nectar which cleans out the poison.
ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
naa-ay tayrai sabh sukh vaseh man aa-ay.
Through Your Name, all peace and comfort comes to abide in the mind.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਧੀ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
bin naavai baaDhee jam pur jaa-ay. ||3||
Without the Name, they are bound and gagged, and dragged off to the City of Death. ||3||

In plain words

Your Naam brings a natural, settled peace. Your Naam brings praise.

Your Naam is the sweet nectar that clears out the poison inside.

Through Your Naam, every peace and comfort comes to live in the mind.

Without the Naam, people are tied up tight and led away to the city of death.

The Naam is nectar that clears away the bitterness inside.
The deeper layer

The Naam brings a settled peace and washes out what poisons you inside.

Naa-ay tayrai sahj: Your Naam brings sahj, a natural, settled calm. It also brings saalaah, praise.

Amrit bikh uth jaa-ay: the Naam is amrit, sweet nectar, and the bikh, the poison, is lifted out. The poison here means clinging too hard to things. Think of a glass of muddy water under a running tap. Keep the clean water flowing, and the mud washes out.

Sabh sukh vaseh man aa-ay: every comfort comes to live in the mind.

The last line speaks of the opposite. It uses an old picture of being tied up and led to the City of Death. A life lived without the Naam is held tight by its own knots, and it meets its end bound up in them.

A Question to Sit With
