Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Such is my treasure: the Naam, a precious jewel.

Please give me the Guru's teaching, so that I may fall at Your feet.

The Name is a jewel; humility is how you open it.
The deeper layer

The Naam is a jewel of a treasure, and humility is how you open it.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Aisaa naam ratan niDh mayrai means "such is my treasure, the jewel of the Name." Ratan means jewel. NiDh means treasure.

Gurmat deh laga-o pag tayrai means "give me the Guru's teaching, so I may fall at Your feet." Gurmat is the Guru's wisdom. Falling at someone's feet is an old picture of setting your pride down.

Think of a gift box on a high shelf. You have to bend and reach with open hands to take it. The treasure and the bowing go together.

A Question to Sit With

What is something precious you would keep safe close to your heart?
