The Mind Is Everything at Once

ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਭੋਗੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
man jogee man bhogee-aa man moorakh gaavaar.
The mind is a Yogi, the mind is a pleasure-seeker; the mind is foolish and ignorant.
ਮਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
man daataa man mangtaa man sir gur kartaar.
The mind is the giver, the mind is the beggar; the mind is the Great Guru, the Creator.
ਪੰਚ ਮਾਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
panch maar sukh paa-i-aa aisaa barahm veechaar. ||2||
The five thieves are conquered, and peace is attained; such is the contemplative wisdom of God. ||2||

In plain words

The mind is a yogi, and the mind is a pleasure-seeker. The mind is foolish and clueless.

The mind is the giver, and the mind is the beggar. The mind is the Great Guru, the Creator.

Overcome the five thieves inside, and peace comes. Such is the wisdom of thinking on the One.

Your mind can be its own best teacher; the way out is already inside it.
The deeper layer

Your mind can be almost anything, even its own best teacher.

Man jogee man bhogee-aa means "the mind is a yogi, the mind is a pleasure-seeker." A jogee, or yogi, is someone who gives up comforts to seek the One. A bhogee is someone chasing fun. Man moorakh gaavaar means "the mind is foolish and clueless."

Man daataa man mangtaa means "the mind is a giver, the mind is a beggar." Think of your own day. At breakfast you share your cereal. By lunch you're begging for someone's chips. One mind, many moods.

Then the surprise. Man sir gur kartaar means "the mind is the great Guru, the Creator." The mind holds something holy inside it.

Panch maar sukh paa-i-aa means "beating the five thieves, peace is found." The five are wanting too much, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. The way out of the mind's mess is already inside the mind.

A Question to Sit With

What are the different moods inside you, and which one do you want to lead?
