Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Lord of life is awake, always awake and aware.

That One is an ocean of peace, a treasure house of amrit, sweet nectar.

One awareness is always awake; turning toward it wakes you up too.
The deeper layer

The One who gives life is always awake, an ocean of peace.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad. It points to the One who never sleeps.

jaagas jeevan jaaganhaaraa — the One who gives life is always awake and aware. sukh saagar amrit bhandaaraa — that One is an ocean of peace and a treasure house of amrit, sweet nectar.

The verse before showed people sleepwalking through life. This line holds up the opposite: the One who is always awake.

Think of a lighthouse that stays lit all night. Ships find their way home by it. When we turn toward that always-awake One, we start to wake up too.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that is always there for you, even when you forget about it?
