In plain words

Day and night, the One watches over every living being and takes care of them. Joy and pain come to each one from what they did before.

Nanak says: I have nothing to my name, and I beg for the gift of Truth. Please bless me with this glory.

Come with empty hands and ask for the one gift worth having: to live true.
The deeper layer

The One watches over every living thing, all day and all night.

ahinis jee-aa daykh — day and night, the One looks after all beings. sukh dukh purab kamaa-ee — the joys and hard times people meet grow out of what was done before. This is karma.

The last line is very humble. karamheen sach bheekhi-aa — Guru Nanak calls himself karamheen, someone with nothing earned, begging for the gift of Truth. He comes with open hands.

Think of a child who holds out both arms for a hug. Guru Nanak asks for the one gift that matters most: to live true.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to ask for truth as a gift?
