Prabhaatee, First Mehl:
ਮਸਟਿ ਕਰਉ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਜਗਿ ਕਹੀਆ ॥

My mistakes and faults will be judged in Your Court.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਆਚਾਰ ॥੧॥
naam binaa kaisay aachaar. ||1||
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can I maintain good conduct? ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If I stay silent, the world calls me a fool.

If I talk too much, I lose the thread of Your love.

My slips and mistakes are seen in Your Court.

Without the Naam, how can I live a good life?

Without something steady at the center, it is hard to know how to live well.
The deeper layer

Whether you speak or keep quiet, the Naam is what steadies how you live.

Masat kara-o moorakh jag kahee-aa: if I stay silent, the world calls me a fool; adhik baka-o tayree liv rahee-aa, if I talk too much, I lose the liv, the loving thread of attention to You. Bhool chook tayrai darbaar, my faults are seen in Your Court. Naam binaa kaisay aachaar, without the Name, how can there be good conduct? The Name becomes the compass beneath behavior.

A Question to Sit With

When is it better to speak up, and when is it better to stay quiet?
