Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 12
Verse 4 of 6

Calling Yourself Great Does Not Make You Great

ਮੈ ਮੈਲੌ ਊਜਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
mai mailou oojal sach so-ay.
I am filthy and polluted; the True Lord is Immaculate and Sublime.
ਊਤਮੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
ootam aakh na oochaa ho-ay.
Calling oneself sublime, one does not become exalted.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਖੂਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
manmukh khooliH mahaa bikh khaa-ay.
The self-willed manmukh openly eats the great poison.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
gurmukh ho-ay so raachai naa-ay. ||3||
But one who becomes Gurmukh is absorbed in the Name. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am muddy and stained; the True One is spotless and shining.

Calling yourself great does not make you great.

Whoever follows only their own wants swallows great poison, right out in the open.

Whoever turns to the Guru soaks up the Naam.

Calling yourself great does not make you great; how you live does.
The deeper layer

Calling yourself great does not make you great; turning toward the Guru fills you with the Naam.

Mai mailou oojal sach so-ay: I am soiled, the True One is spotless. This is honest humility. Ootam aakh na oochaa ho-ay, calling oneself sublime does not make one exalted. Then the contrast of two orientations: manmukh khooliH mahaa bikh khaa-ay, the self-willed openly swallows what poisons; gurmukh ho-ay so raachai naa-ay, one turned toward the teaching is absorbed in the Name. The whole difference is the direction one faces.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between being good and just saying you are?
