Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 12
Verse 3 of 6

The Criticized One Learns the Way

ਜਿਸੁ ਨਿੰਦਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jis nindeh so-ee biDh jaanai.
He alone knows the way, who has been slandered.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ॥
gur kai sabday dar neesaanai.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he is stamped with the Lord's Insignia in His Court.
ਕਾਰਣ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
kaaran naam antargat jaanai.
He realizes the Naam, the Cause of causes, deep within himself.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥
jis no nadar karay so-ee biDh jaanai. ||2||
He alone knows the way, who is blessed by the Lord's Glance of Grace. ||2||

In plain words

The one who is spoken badly of is the one who knows the way.

Through the Guru's Word, that one carries the One's mark of welcome at the One's Court.

That one comes to know the Naam, the cause of all things, deep inside.

Whoever the One looks on with grace, that one knows the way.

Being criticized can wear down the ego and teach you what matters most.
The deeper layer

Being put down can wear away pride, and the One's grace teaches you the way.

Jis nindeh so-ee bidh jaanai: the very one who is slandered comes to know the way. Criticism, received rightly, acts as spiritual sandpaper on the ego. Gur kai sabday dar neesaanai, through the Shabad one bears the insignia, the mark of belonging, at the Court; kaaran naam antargat jaanai, one knows the Name, the cause of causes, deep within; jis no nadar karay so-ee bidh jaanai, and it is grace (nadar) that opens this understanding. Being criticized can teach what praise never could.

A Question to Sit With

Has criticism ever helped you get better at something?
