Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 12
Verse 6 of 6

I Speak as I Am Moved to Speak

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
ustat nindaa sabad veechaar.
I pay no attention to slander and praise; I contemplate the Word of the Shabad.
ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
jo dayvai tis ka-o jaikaar.
I celebrate the One who blesses me with His Bounty.
ਤੂ ਬਖਸਹਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
too bakhsahi jaat pat ho-ay.
Whomever You forgive, O Lord, is blessed with status and honor.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥੧੨॥
naanak kahai kahaavai so-ay. ||5||12||
Says Nanak, I speak as He causes me to speak. ||5||12||

In plain words

I let praise and insult pass by, and I think on the Shabad, the Guru's Word.

I cheer for the One who gives.

Whoever You forgive is given place and honor.

Nanak says: I speak as the One makes me speak.

Do not get swept up by insults or flattery; keep steady and let true words flow through you.
The deeper layer

Praise and insult both pass by; keep your mind on the Shabad and cheer for the One who gives.

Ustat nindaa sabad veechaar: setting aside both praise and slander, I contemplate the Shabad, an equanimity toward flattery and insult alike. Jo dayvai tis ka-o jaikaar, I celebrate the One who gives. Too bakhsahi jaat pat ho-ay, whomever You forgive gains honor and status. And the closing humility of the vessel: Naanak kahai kahaavai so-ay, Nanak speaks as the One causes him to speak. True words feel less like personal achievement than like something flowing through.

A Question to Sit With

Why can too much praise be just as tricky to handle as too much criticism?
