Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 13
Verse 1 of 6

Too Much of Everything

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
parbhaatee mehlaa 1.
Prabhaatee, First Mehl:
ਖਾਇਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਪੈਧੈ ਘਰ ਕੀ ਹਾਣਿ ॥
khaa-i-aa mail vaDhaa-i-aa paiDhai ghar kee haan.
Eating too much, one's filth only increases; wearing fancy clothes, one's home is disgraced.
ਬਕਿ ਬਕਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਣਿ ॥੧॥
bak bak vaad chalaa-i-aa bin naavai bikh jaan. ||1||
Talking too much, one only starts arguments. Without the Name, everything is poison - know this well. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Eat too much, and the dirt inside only grows. Dress up in fancy clothes, and the home loses its good name.

Talk and talk, and you only start arguments. Without the Naam, everything is poison. Know this well.

Piling on more never fills the hole inside; the center is what matters.
The deeper layer

Too much of anything, with no Naam at the center, turns to poison.

Khaa-i-aa mail vadhaa-i-aa, paidhai ghar kee haan: eating too much only increases inner filth; fancy clothes bring the home loss, not gain. Bak bak vaad chalaa-i-aa, endless talk only starts arguments; bin naavai bikh jaan, without the Name, know it all as poison. The verse is not against food, clothes, or speech; it is against excess without a center. Piling on more never fills the emptiness inside; the Name at the center is what keeps good things from turning sour.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed that more of something is not always better? When?
