The Fish in Love With Water

ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰੈ ਨੀਝਰੁ ਝਰੈ ਅਮਰ ਅਨੰਦ ਸਰੂਪ ॥
ajar jarai neejhar jharai amar anand saroop.
They endure the unendurable, and the Nectar of the Lord, the Embodiment of Bliss, trickles into them continuously.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਲ ਕੌ ਮੀਨੁ ਸੈ ਥੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥੫॥੧੩॥
naanak jal kou meen sai thay bhaavai raakho pareet. ||5||13||
O Nanak, the fish is in love with the water; if it pleases You, Lord, please enshrine such love within me. ||5||13||

In plain words

They bear what cannot be borne, and the nectar of the One, who is joy that never dies, trickles into them without stopping.

Nanak says: the fish loves the water. If it pleases You, plant such love in me.

Love the One the way a fish loves water, so close that nearness is life itself.
The deeper layer

Love the One the way a fish loves water.

The closing verse is one of the shabad's jewels. Ajar jarai neejhar jharai, amar anand saroop: they bear the unbearable, and nectar trickles into them ceaselessly, the very embodiment of undying bliss. Then Naanak jal kou meen, Nanak is a fish for the water: sai thay bhaavai raakho preet, if it pleases You, enshrine such love in me. The fish cannot live apart from water; so the soul longs to love the One so completely that nearness itself is life.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so much it feels like part of who you are?
