By Guru's Grace, the mind becomes steady and stable; night and day, it remains satisfied with the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Chant the Name of the One, Har, Har, my brothers and sisters.

By the Guru's grace, the mind grows steady and still. Night and day, it stays full and glad with the One's sweet taste.

A mind with something steady to rest on stops spinning.
The deeper layer

Keep the One's Name on your lips, and the mind grows steady and full.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har har naam japahu jan bhaa-ee: chant the Name, Har Har, friends. Repeating the Name is naam simran, keeping the One in mind. Gur parsaad man asthir hovai: by the Guru's grace, the mind becomes asthir, steady, like a lake gone still. An-din har ras rahi-aa aghaa-ee: night and day it stays aghaa-ee, satisfied, full of the One's sweet taste. A mind given something steady to rest on stops its restless spinning.

A Question to Sit With

What is one word or thought you could return to when your mind starts racing?
