Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Night and day, day and night, worship the One with love. In this dark age, this is the profit worth gathering, my friends.
Those who serve the One stay clean forever, and no dirt ever sticks to them. They keep their minds on the True Name.
A heart turned toward the One is the profit worth gathering, and it keeps you clean inside.
An-din bhagat karahu din raatee: worship with love, night and day. Is jug kaa laahaa: this is the profit of this age. Laahaa is a merchant's word, profit. Speaking to a town of traders, Guru Amar Das names the profit that lasts: a heart turned toward the One. The jug, the age, is Kali Yuga, the dark age, these hard times.
Sadaa jan nirmal mail na laagai: those who serve stay clean, and no dirt sticks to them. Sach naam chit laa-ee: they keep their minds on the True Name. A mind resting on what is true stays clear, like a lotus leaf that water rolls right off.
If you measured a good day by what you gathered inside rather than outside, what would count?
