Verse 5 of 5

Nothing Greater Than the Name

ਜੋ ਤੂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਰਤੇ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
jo too karahi so hovai kartay avar na karnaa jaa-ee.
Whatever You do comes to pass, O Creator; nothing else can be done.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦਾਤਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak naavai jayvad avar na daataa pooray gur tay paa-ee. ||4||2||
O Nanak, nothing is as great as the Blessing of the Name; it is obtained through the Perfect Guru. ||4||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever You do, Creator, comes to be. Nothing else can be done.

Nanak says: no gift is as great as the Name, and it comes through the perfect Guru.

Of everything you could be given, the Name is the greatest gift.
The deeper layer

Whatever the Creator does comes to be, and the greatest gift, the Naam, comes through the Guru.

This last verse gathers up the trust at the heart of the shabad.

Jo too karahi so hovai kartay means, Creator, whatever You do comes to be. Avar na karnaa jaa-ee means nothing else can be done.

It does not mean "nothing matters, so why try." It is a calm confidence in the way life flows. Think of a sailor who trusts the wind. She still steers, but she does not fight the sky.

Naanak naavai jayvad avar na daataa means Nanak says no gift is as great as the Name. Pooray gur tay paa-ee means it is received through the perfect Guru.

A Question to Sit With

If you could keep only one thing forever, what would you choose?
