Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Dear One, You are my One and Only.

I meditate on You, and I praise You. Freedom and wisdom come from You.

Freedom and clear thinking come as gifts.
The deeper layer

The One is your one and only, and freedom and wisdom both come from there.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har jee-o too mayraa ik so-ee means "Dear Lord, You are my One and Only." It is a heart that isn't split in many directions.

Two gifts are named. Gat means freedom, being set loose from what holds us. Mat means wisdom, clear understanding. Gat mat tujh tay ho-ee means "freedom and wisdom come from You."

Think of a plant on a windowsill. It grows, but the light it grows toward isn't something it made. We don't build freedom and clear thinking all by ourselves either. They are given. This idea comes back again and again in this raag, this musical mode.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good in you that you didn't create by yourself?
