Iron Into Gold

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸੁ ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਸਭਾ ॥
raam naam ras raam rasaa-in ras pee-aa gurmat rasbhaa.
The Sublime Essence of the Lord's Name is the source of nectar and bliss; drinking in this Sublime Essence, following the Guru's Teachings, I have become happy.
loh manoor kanchan mil sangat har ur Dhaari-o gur haribhaa. ||2||
Even iron slag is transformed into gold, joining the Lord's Congregation. Through the Guru, the Lord's Light is enshrined within the heart. ||2||

In plain words

The sweet taste of the Naam of the One is the fountain of all sweetness. Following the Guru's teaching, I drank it, and I became glad.

Even rusty scrap iron turns to gold by joining the Sangat. Through the Guru, the One's light is placed in the heart.

In the Sangat, even what looks worthless is turned to gold.
The deeper layer

Joining the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — can change anyone, the way scrap iron might turn into gold.

raam naam ras raam rasaa-in — the sweetness of the Name is rasaa-in, the fountain all sweetness flows from. ras pee-aa gurmat rasbhaa — drinking it, following the Guru, I have become glad.

loh manoor kanchan mil sangat — even loh manoor, rusty scrap iron, turns into kanchan, gold, by joining the Sangat. har ur Dhaari-o gur haribhaa — through the Guru, the One's light is placed in the heart.

Think of a scruffy, worn-out puppy at a shelter. A loving family takes it home, and it becomes bright and happy. No one is too rusty to change. Nobody is ever written off.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what has helped bring out the best in you, even when you felt worn down?
