God is never found, even by making all sorts of new efforts. The Lord God is obtained only through the Perfect Guru. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

O mind, remember the Naam of the One, and worship.

The One is never found by any scheme, however new. The One is found through the Perfect Guru.

The deepest things aren't reached by trying harder, but by stopping the struggle.
The deeper layer

The One is found through the Perfect Guru, beyond every clever scheme.

This is the rahao, the pause line, the center of the shabad. jap man raam naam — O mind, remember the Naam and worship. upjamp upaa-ay na paa-ee-ai kathoo — the One is never found through upaa-ay: schemes, tricks, newer and newer efforts. gur poorai har parabh laabhaa — the One is found through the Perfect Guru.

Think of trying to fall asleep. The harder you try, the more awake you feel. Sleep comes when you stop forcing it. The deepest things work like that. They cannot be forced or built by our own cleverness. They arrive through the Guru, when the struggling stops. This idea comes back again and again in this raag.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you've been forcing that might come easier if you stopped straining for it?
