In plain words

The Guru, the True Guru, planted the Naam of the One firmly in me. I was as good as dead, and remembering the One, Har, Har, I came back to life.

Blessed, blessed is the Guru, the Perfect True Guru! When I was drowning in a sea of poison, the Guru reached out an arm and pulled me out.

Even what has gone quiet inside you can wake back up and sing.
The deeper layer

Remembering the Naam brings back to life what had gone still inside you, and the Guru's arm lifts you out when you are going under.

gur satgur naam darirh-aa-i-o — the true Guru planted the Name firmly in me. ham mu-ay jeevay har japibhaa — I was as good as gone, and remembering the Name, I came alive again. Something inside had gone quiet, and it woke up.

Dhan Dhan guroo — blessed, blessed is the Guru. bikh dubday baah day-ay kadhibhaa — when I was going under in a sea of poison, the Guru gave me an arm and pulled me out.

Think of a lifeguard reaching down to a swimmer who is slipping under. There is only tenderness in that hand. And there is huge relief in being lifted back into the air.

A Question to Sit With

When has something you thought was over in you come back to life?
