Verse 1 of 5

The mind lit up with singing

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
parbhaatee mehlaa 5.
Prabhaatee, Fifth Mehl:
ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
gun gaavat man ho-ay anand.
Singing His Glorious Praises, the mind is in ecstasy.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥
aath pahar simra-o bhagvant.
Twenty-four hours a day, I meditate in remembrance on God.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕਲਮਲ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
jaa kai simran kalmal jaahi.
Remembering Him in meditation, the sins go away.
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਹਮ ਚਰਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
tis gur kee ham charnee paahi. ||1||
I fall at the Feet of that Guru. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Singing the One's praises, my mind fills with joy.

All day and all night, I remember the One.

Remembering the One, my wrongs go away.

I bow at the feet of that Guru.

Singing about what you love can fill your whole mind with light.
The deeper layer

Singing the One's praises fills the mind with joy, and remembering the One clears away what weighs you down.

"Anand" is bliss; "aath pahar," the eight watches, means all day and night; "kalmal" (heaviness, impurities) "jaahi," leave. Bowing at the Guru's feet is gratitude made into a gesture.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a song or an activity that makes your mind feel light and bright? What is it?
